Neil Jennings began the Student Switch Off while a PhD student at UEA.
Running from 2009 to 2011 in 40% of Britain’s universities, the campaign pitches student halls of residence against each other, with the lowest energy user on each campus winning a huge party. Over three years, the scheme has reduced electricity use by 4.5 million kWh, cutting emissions by 2,500 tonnes of CO2 and saving £400,000. Over 26,000 students signed up as volunteers, with 3,300 attended training sessions and screenings of environmental films.
