The role of hydrogen in powering road transport

Hydrogen has the potential to reduce various environmental impacts of transport and enhance energy security as well as reducing CO2 emissions. In this paper we explore some of the key aspects to be addressed in considering the use of hydrogen in road based transport including:

* the technical issues and the costs of different options;
* the evidence on CO2 emissions from different vehicle technologies and energy supply mechanisms;
* the potential for the widespread use of renewables to produce hydrogen;
* measures which might be taken in the short and medium term to encourage technological progression towards hydrogen based road transport

Finally, the report also contains our conclusions and suggestions for further work in this topic area.
