- My Thesis' Abstract
Soft rock (sand and clay) cliffs comprise 18% of the UK coast. Due to their geological composition, they experience high rates of erosion which are expected to increase with climate change. In addition to concerns for existing structures, this presents sustainability issues towards future land-use planning on the coast.
Using the SCAPE (Soft Cliff and Platform Erosion) model, developed as part of the Tyndall Coastal Simulator, future rates of erosion on the south-west coast of the Isle of Wight will be modelled by replicating complex geomorphic interactions. This will provide coastal managers with an understanding of future cliff erosion rates, particularly considering the impacts of climate change.
